McCarthy Fuels Bill Thomas Rumor

The rumor that Congressman Bill Thomas is NOT going to file for reelection is getting some confirmation. Kevin McCarthy has told more than one person around the Capitol that he is making tentative plans for what he hopes will be an easy Primary contest.

It has long been rumored that Thomas, who is term-limited out of his Chairmanship, would step down this year to help ease the way for McCarthy. The Thomas people (of which McCarthy is one) believe that Sen. Roy Ashburn, who does not have a free ride, will not risk his safe Senate seat, thus leaving Kevin with only minor Primary opposition.

McCarthy has gone so far as telling some members of the Assembly that he would like to stay on as leader even if he is running for Congress. It is doubtful the Assembly GOP Caucus would go for such an arrangement. But with a talent poll about 3 inches deep, the Caucus only has two or three legitimate contenders.

Thomas isn't going anywhere. He nominated Boehner for Majority Leader and is generally regarded as the power behind the throne. McCarthy will have to wait his turn.

When McCarthy leaves, Walters will be a shoo-in for leader

It took McCarthy 1 year to be the leader of the Assembly Republicans. When elected to Congress, he will be the Speaker of the House in 10 years.

There is a story in Bob Novak's column today, saying that Thomas may start becoming the acting chair of Republican caucus meetings which is a position of tremendous power. I don't think he is going anywhere.

I just called the Kern County Elections Office at (661) 868-3590. They told me McCarthy took out papers for the Assembly. Call them yourself.

California is such a large state, why does Bakersfield of all places get to be the epicenter of Republican politics? Everytime there is a shift on the fault line it ripples up and down California's political community.

Of course he took out papers for Assembly. Bill Thomas may not know himself what he is going to do. But if Thomas decides to hold on for two more years, his protégé McCarthy will end up running against Sen. Roy Ashburn for Congress.

There are many people in Kern who feel Thomas will try to pull a fast one and step aside at the last minute, giving Ashburn only five days to make a potentially career-ending decision.

The question is not whether or not McCarthy pulled papers, but if he filed them. If they were filed then he can't run for another seat, even if Thomas runs for reelection. I think Thomas stays because he likes his job and even though he could make a mint as a lobbyist, I don't think he needs more money for his lifestyle. Besides, I have heard he and Ashburn are burying the hatchet.

Anybody with a lick of campaign experience knows that the filing period doesnt open until February 13, and goes until the 2nd week of march.

"Pulling papers" right now means you are pulling the in-leiu signatures.

So in simple terms for you staffer types.....McCarthy can pull all the papers he wants right now, but has until March whatever to decide on what he wants to do.

I think we should elect McCarthy to Congress and make him House Republican leader on day one.

I think Todd Spitzer is the natural person to take over when McCarthy leaves. He is smart and good looking like Kevin. He has a great temperment like KM. He looks great on TV like McCarthy. He has a law degree, even Kevin does not have one of those. Spitzer would make a great leadere for the Republicans.

Spitzer as leader. Does anyone have a remedy for uncontrollable laughter?

Thomas will give McCarthy a special election.

If Thomas weren't such a little sneak then Ashburn would be the clear choice. But since I believe Thomas will not announce his decision until it is too late for Ashburn to even file papers. McCarthy is Thomas's puppet and Ashburn is clearly the best canidate.

and in response to why is Bakersfield the epicenter of Republican politics. That would be because it is the most conservative city in all of California with a population over 100,000 and it is the 8th most conservative city in all of America.
