Is Jim Brulte the Biggest Hypocrite in CA?

For years, Republicans have talked of reaching out to build support among women and minorities. Now, state Senator Jim Brulte is putting his money where his party's mouth is--and jaws are dropping. Brulte, one of California's savviest GOP strategists, has announced a sort of ad hoc affirmative action plan: Henceforth, he said, he will contribute in party primaries only to women and minority candidates. "I think our message, by and large is all right. But if we're ever going to be the majority party and govern in California, we need a more diverse group of messengers," said the Rancho Cucamonga lawmaker. -LA Times

Jim Brulte received undue credit for the 1994 Republican takeover of the State Assembly. You have to keep in mind that 1994 had a huge national Republican trend that had more to do with the anti Bill Clinton mood and Newt Gingrich’s “Contract with America” than anything Brulte burped up.

Is Brulte a political genius? Hardly. He was a key figure that worked out the “incumbent protection” redistricting measure where he locked in for 10 years Democrat control over the State Assembly and State Senate. And why? Because he wanted a plane ride on Air Force One. Additionally, his lack of leadership in the recall movement was deafening.

This year, Brulte is doing everything he can to keep an image of the Republican Party as the Party of “Old White Guys” or “the Rich.”

Look at Brulte’s record of endorsements:

U.S. Senate Race:
Bill Jones over Rosario Marin (Hispanic)

State Controller
Tony Strickland over Abel Maldonado (Hispanic)

Attorney General
Chuck Poochigian over Pierre Prosper (Black)

Insurance Commissioner
Steve Poizner over Gary Mendoza (Hispanic)

Board of Equalization 3rd District
Ray Haynes over Michelle Steel (Asian/Woman)

Congressional District 48
John Campbell over Marilyn Brewer (Woman)

State Senate 34th District
Lynn Daucher (Rich) over Van Tran (Asian)

On behalf of all California Republicans, I would like to thank Jimmy Brulte. If for nothing else, for teaching us that Gastric bypass surgery (stomach stapling) works.

Amen. Although - there are renewed rumors that some in Pooch's camp are trying to re-start the Prosper for US Senate movement. Sure hope that Prosper guts it out and runs for something. its time that brulte's influence burns out, kinda like the influence of the indian tribes and Doolittle and Abramoff - Guess Arnold did SOMETHING right!

For what it's worth, Brulte endorsed Rasario Marin, not Jones.

You're so right. Jim Brulte is the most overrated and self-serving politician in the state. If you look at his full record he lost much more often than he won with the obvious exception of 1994.

The really pathetic thing about Brulte is that he knows better but is still out there sabotaging non-white candidates. He talks about minorities and then has opposed every one. Brulte support Marin? Not publicly, that's for sure.

Is Poolhall Junkie wrong?

Make your point without calling names.

Brulte has done more to harm minority candidates than anyone else in the state.

I apologize for the Rosario mis-take. My memory fails me now and again.

Matt - If I'm such an idiot. Please expain. How don't these statement wreak of rancid hypocrisy?

Are other bits of my commentary perhaps a bit insulting and mean-spirited? Of course. But I don't care for JimmyBoy, and I believe that came across.

That said, how is this wrong? He said it, and doesn't come close to living it. By definition does that not make him a hypocrite?

Brulte never publicly endorsed Marin. And what factual arguments does Rexroad have with Brulte's record of actively opposing the few ethnic Republican candidates out there who can win?

I like Matt but he is dependent on being a Sacto insider to get his bread buttered. That's why he's kissing Brulte's ass and name calling. But Brulte's record - which conflicts with his public comments - speaks for itself. Hypocrite and phony.

Last time I checked, Lynn Daucher is female. There's no hypocrisy in Brulte choosing to support her. He pledged to support female and ethnic minority candidates, so endorsing a white woman in a primary against a Vietnamese man is in keeping with the pledge.

Too bad he never pledged to support candidates who believe in limited government.

Brulte should endorse Van as well. Him choosing Lynn over Van is not "keeping his pledge" especially when Van has made strong indication to seek the 34th Senate before Daucher.

The appearance looks like Brulte is sabbotaging Van.

If Daucher wasn't rich, I doubt Brulte would have backed her, hence, the endorsement of Daucher has more to do with her being rich than her being a woman.

Poolhall Junkie's main point was that Brulte is not helping the image of the GOP by backing "old white guys" or the Rich.

I personally don't care about minority outreach within the GOP, but it makes the party look extremely bad if what Brulte is doing is true.

You don't say, "I will only back woman and minorities" and start going against every single minority group and say, "I didn't break my pledge in the 34th because I backing a woman."

The Democrats will use Brulte's statement everytime the GOP tries to do minority outreach and say it is all talk.

I knew Jim Bruite when he was in the CA ANG. He did nothing for the unit.
Everything he did was for himself.
Its too bad it took all these years for Ca too fine out what kind of a person he is.

A friend just directed me to your website...And although I generally don't respond to bloggers who hide behind screen names (much like cockroaches who prance around in the dark, but scurry to hide when the light is shined upon them), I thought I would correct the record.

Years ago, during an interview with David Broder of the Washington Post, I bemoaned the fact that our party was fielding too few women and minority candidates and that although the neighborhoods of our state were changing, our candidate recruitment was not.

I then stated "Although I generally do not get involved in primaries, this election I plan to, and I will be generous in my support of women and minority Republican candidates."

I did not say I would only support women and minorities and I did not say I would support anyone who wasn't the most qualified candidate.

During that election I contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to women and minority candidates.

Since that time, our party has retooled its candidate recruitment efforts and organizations that believe in our message but understand that we need a more diverse group of messengers have grown. Our party is also doing a much better job, (particularly at the local level) of recruiting candidates that reflect not only the values of California but its diversity as well.

I am happy to match my record of supporting Republicans in general as well as my record at encouraging candidates of all people groups to run for office. And I am happy to debate (out in the open, not in the shadows) anyone who wants to have a discussion on that part of my record.
