It’s been getting on my nerves to see people try and bash Mary Jo Ford and Jim Gilchrist for being members of “George Wallace’s American Independent Party.”

I don’t know either of them personally, but I feel like I'm standing on solid ground saying that neither intentionally aligned themselves with the former populist, racist Alabama Governor.

Instead, it’s arguably much worse – they’re just too stupid to know how to register to vote.

They wanted to disassociate themselves from the Republican Party, and in a fit of “independence,” saw the word “Independent” on the VoterReg form, and marked their “X.” Unknowingly, rather than registering “Decline to State,” which is the type of “independence” they presumably intended, they instead signed on with the California affiliate of the Constitution Party.

Let’s all pledge to stop calling these candidates racists, and instead expose them for the dolts they are.

Of course it's not the Republican party she was disassociating herself from. If you notice on the card she used to be a registered Democrat and then changed.

What probably happened is that she meant to register as an independent and since this happened in 1974 according to the registration, forgot about doing so after she switched again to become a Republican. Unless there is some record of her supporting Wallace and his ilk in some way, I think the whole thing is much ado about nothing.

I should mention that it's not 1974, it's 1994.

Jim Gilchrist I think believes in much of the platform of the AIP. That doesn't make him a racist.

Mary Jo Ford's AIP membership I would attribute to simple cluelessness.

Her lying when the newspaper mentioned it is a different story.

If a voter actually READS the registration form, the difference between choosing from the list of parties -- including AIP -- and picking "decline to state" is not THAT hard to discern.

I know, having been a DTS in my transition from Reep to Dem when the R's took a wild right turn.

The insanity in all this is her claim that someone else checked the party box on her voter reg card on two different occasions. If you believe that claim of fraud, I have a Nigerian email scam for ya!
