The Man Who Lost The 53rd

When the full story of the Special Election in the 53rd AD is told, Kevin McCarthy will be the answer to the question, "Who lost the 53rd?"

Greg Hill was the nominee in 2004 and made a credible, though flawed run.

The incumbent died and a Special was called and Hill decided to run again. He had the money and many endorsements from local officials. Indeed, several Democrat local officials endorsed him. But, Hill was trying to run as a conservative and Mr. McCarthy could not have another one of "those" in his caucus.

So,he took Paul Nowatka by the hand and walked the halls of the Capitol. Kevin let folks know, "Paul is the man!"

Then someone who had lots of money, and is a liberal on social issues and is unable to answer direct questions on economic issues or even remember her position on bonds, Mary Jo Ford, got in the race--she promised to put in half a million dollars--so far she has given herself $350,000.

Evidence of her "strong" support in the district is that she has received only one donation from a district resident and has NO elected officials in the district endorsing her.

McCarthy's eyes glazed over when he saw the green. So he forgot the basic question, can she win? No one knows her, her attempt to be a female Steve Poizner won't play in the South Bay and she has no connections to the District. I take that back--she is a proud member, according to her bio and brochures of the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club.

Kevin through aside his candidate, Nowatka, to buy into a liberal GOP'er (who was once a member of the American Independent Party)with more money.

Four theories:

1. Kevin is too lazy to raise money, so he wants self funders.
2. He prefers liberals running for Assembly
3. Kevin can't raise money
4. All of the above

What does this say about McCarthy and his professionalism? A lot. You don't support a candidate, Nowatka, then throw him away. You don't take a potenial winner, Hill and demand he leave the race.

If I were running for office I would be concerned about having the support of
Mr. McCarthy. He loves you today, but if someone who is a liberal comes up with a bigger offer, you are toast.

The Daily Breeze today ran a story about the candidate many are calling "Money Jo"

So is so out of step with her district that one of her brochures has a beautiful picture of the coastline--in Washington State.

My prediction is that she finishes a distant third, behind the Democrat Lieu and the real Republican Nowatka. Hill would have won, Nowatka could have won, Money Jo Ford is why people are cynical about politics. Thank you Kevin for reminding us.

There is no excuse for McCarthy remaining Assembly GOP Leader other than a complete and total lack of ambition and talent in the Caucus.

I can count on one hand, without using all my fingers, the members of the Assembly Rep. Caucus who have the qualifications to be a successful leader.

A petulant post by a disgruntled Nowatka relative.

Kev just doesn't have what it takes. Look the attrition of his staff. Most the talent left for the Gov's office or the Senate.

His weakness is what allowed Fabian to be such the pain in the Gov's neck that he is.

McCarthy is the most effective leader the caucus has ever had. When Ford pulls off the upset of the century that will be clear.

Anon 6:43,
You must work for Kev. That's the only way someone would write something like that.

Isnt rexroad mccarthys guy? doesn't he deserve blame for all our continued losses?

At 9/05/2005 12:04 AM, Anonymous One Who Knows said...

You can't blame any of this on Rexroad. This is all Kevin, and every complaint listed on this board is accurate. McCarthy's biggest flaw (and there are many) is is incredible ego. He thinks he knows everything, and doesn't listen to anyone except himself. (Well, there is his, um, "chief of staff," if that's what you want to call her. Together they have made that office a joke. Why she hasn't been fired yet is another story.)

Remember last year when he boasted that he would pick up, what was it -- 7, 8, 9 seats? And how many did he bring back? Oh right: ZERO. If there were any credible member who could step up, the Leader's Office could be theirs for the taking.

Kevin has been raising money to beat the band - check the filings!

His caucus is solidly united behind him and they win big floor fights on a regular basis.

The lack of leadership wars is testimony to his effectiveness, not the lack of ambitious assemblymembers with enormous egos.

Mary Jo Ford named her children Dakota and Sequoia. That fact alone should be enough to discredit her as a serious Republican candidate!

Even worse, it's three kids, named: Cheyene, Dakota and Seqouia.

What floor fights has McCarthy won? Name three in the past year, please.

Also, Rexroad is a rookie. He's not bad, just not enough seasoning.

Charlie - you have a problem with children being named after SUVs?

Kevin McCarthy predicted major gains in 2004 - an incredibly amateur mistake - and then blew two seats we could/should have won - Parra and the Santa Barbara seat with Bob Pohl. It's incredible McCarthy didn't recruit a candidate other than Dean Gardner. What's worse, once we knew about all the name changes and bankruptices we still wasted $2 million on Gardner and then let Pohl barely lose because of lack of funds. Now McCarthy is pushing Steve Poizner - an anti-Republican RINO - simply because he's rich.

Everyone seems to be bagging on McCarthy for supporting Poizner, but McCarthy has only limited involvement with Poizner compared to Jim Brulte -- are these posters trying to say that Brulte's a RINO?

At 9/05/2005 10:36 PM, Anonymous Or Conservative Leaders said...

Or other Poizner endorsers like Bill Campbell and John Lewis? Are you calling them RINO's?

the only reason McCarthy is qualified to be leader is because he has the "best hair in government"

At 9/06/2005 11:06 AM, Anonymous SCOREBOARD said...

Look at the scoreboard...since McCarthy has been leader:

Gardner - LOSS (and he didn't recruit a better candidate)
Kuykendall - LOSS
Pohl - LOSS
Hill - LOSS
Betancourt - LOSS
etc etc

There should have been at LEAST 1 win in 2004.

The grassroots GOP activist need to call their Assemblymembers and tell them to elect a new leader.

Per the previous posts on Brulte, John Lewis and Bill Campbell and whether they are RINOs for supporting Poizner I'd give John and Bill the benefit of the doubt that they don't know Steve's full record. As for Jim, he's going to make a lot of money off the campaign and controlling Commissioner Poizner. He knows but doesn't care how terrible Poizner is.

But wait, there's more.

Even though everyone has known for a while about Ford's past membership in the American Independent Party (which I attribute to her general cluelessness about politics and policy rather than to a belief in their principles - most of their registrations are from people who thought that was how you became an "independent" in California), she's now lying about it in an open letter to the Daily Breeze.

9/8: You gotta LOVE McCarthy. Did you see his quote in the Daily Breeze article - basically, it says, 'yep - I know that either Mary Jo is lying to us or is just downright stupid or both - but, heck, I'm so happy to be endorsing her.' EXACT QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: "Our support for her is steadfast, she's been a Republican her entire life," he said, before a reporter informed him of her status as a registered Democrat elsewhere. "If she gets elected in the 53rd District, she will represent Republicans, Democrats and independents -- that's her job."
Can't wait to see if Money Jo shows up at the Forum today!!!

Who in the Assembly Republican Caucus can raise more money than McCarthy?

At 9/09/2005 9:09 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The answer is no one. Throw stones if you please but you better have a solution. McCarthy is still the best person to lead the Republican Caucus.
